Counter-Strike's Skin Economy

In CS:GO there are cosmetics that can be purchased with real money. These cosmetics are called "skins" as they act like a skin for your weapon. These items are purchased to make players items look cool.
There is NO gameplay advantage to purchasing a skin for a gun they are strictly for looks. The prices of these items are based on the demand of the item amongst players. Each weapon has a "default skin" that a player uses if they choose to not spend any money on a new better (looking) one.

As you can see above, on the left is what the "default skins" look like and on the right is some examples of some of the "skins" you can purchase for the same weapon.

Skins can be purchased with real money on the steam market . It is called the steam market as it is less like shop where you can buy skins and more like a marketplace where skins are constantly being traded. The prices of these skin can flucuate based on demand.
This leads to many players trying to buy skins at a low price so that they can then sell them once the price rises so they profit.

This is an example of a skin and how it's price flucuates on the Market. As you can see its price decreased as it aged due to people losing interest in owning te skin after its initial release.
